The Green Visa is a 5-year, self-sponsored UAE residence visa. Unlike a standard employment visa, it is not tied to a single employer, which means holders are not at risk of losing their residency status the moment a job ends. The visa is renewable, and dependants can be sponsored under defined conditions.

This visa was designed to attract and retain skilled talent, freelancers, and investors who contribute to the UAE economy but do not necessarily meet the higher thresholds required for a Golden Visa.

The Green Visa is available to several categories of applicants, each with its own eligibility conditions.

1. Skilled Employees

Professionals working in skilled roles can apply for the Green Visa if they meet the following conditions.

• Hold a valid employment contract in the UAE
• Are classified under occupational skill levels 1, 2, or 3 according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE)
• Meet the minimum monthly salary threshold set for this category
• Hold a recognised academic qualification relevant to the role

2. Freelancers and Self-Employed Professionals

Freelancers and self-employed individuals can apply for the Green Visa, provided they meet the following conditions.

• Hold a valid freelance or self-employment permit issued by MOHRE, or by an accredited UAE free zone
• Hold a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent specialised diploma
• Demonstrate sufficient annual income from freelance activity over the past two years, or provide proof of financial solvency throughout the residency period

3. Investors and Business Partners

Investors and business partners can qualify for the Green Visa if they hold an approved business license and meet the investment conditions set for this category. Investors who hold a significantly higher level of real estate or business investment may instead be better suited to the 10-year Golden Visa, which carries no income requirement.

4. Outstanding Students and Graduates

Recent graduates from accredited UAE universities, as well as outstanding students with strong academic records, may also qualify under a dedicated Green Visa category. This pathway is typically applied for within a defined period after graduation and allows recipients to seek employment or start a business in the UAE.

Self-Sponsorship

You hold your own residency status, independent of a single employer. This means you can change jobs, move into freelance work, or pause employment without your visa being automatically cancelled.

Extended Grace Period

If your Green Visa expires or is cancelled, you are granted a significantly longer grace period than a standard employment visa allows, giving you more time to regularise your status without facing penalties.

Family Sponsorship

Green Visa holders can sponsor their spouse and children, including extended eligibility for sons up to a certain age and unmarried daughters without an age limit, provided the relevant income conditions are met.

Status Change Without Leaving the UAE

If you are already in the UAE on a tourist visa or another visa category, you may be able to change your status to a Green Visa without needing to exit and re-enter the country, provided you meet all eligibility requirements.

Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility Category

Step 2: Gather and Prepare Documents

Step 3: Submit the Application

The application is submitted through the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security) portal or through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), depending on your emirate. Nines Consultancy manages this submission on your behalf.

Step 4: Complete the Medical Fitness Test

Applicants are required to complete a health check at an approved medical centre as part of the residency process.

Step 5: Visa Issuance and Emirates ID

Both visas offer self-sponsored UAE residency, but they target different applicant profiles. The Green Visa is designed for skilled professionals, freelancers, and investors who do not necessarily meet the higher thresholds required for a Golden Visa, and it is valid for 5 years.

The Golden Visa is aimed at larger investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents, and select professional categories, and it is valid for 10 years. Golden Visa holders are also not subject to a salary requirement to sponsor family members, whereas Green Visa holders are.
